STORRS, Conn. (September 30, 2006) - A groundbreaking for a pedestrian walkway might seem, well, pedestrian. But not if it is the concrete embodiment of the vision for a $165 million downtown makeover.

Ground will be broken Tuesday on a walkway that will connect the Mansfield Town Hall, Community Center and future site of the Storrs Center development on Storrs Road, Route 195.

The project is intended to create a central village for shoppers, diners, workers, students and residents that will be, above all, pedestrian-friendly.

Ground will be broken at 11 a.m. in the town hall parking lot. The public is invited.

A landscaped and lighted brick walkway will run adjacent to the town hall, next to E. O. Smith High School and connect Storrs Road to the community center behind town hall. GEG Construction of Ludlow, Mass., will build the connector according to design specifications provided by the town and LeylandAlliance, the master developer of Storrs Center.

"This project brings us one step closer to the reality of a town center, a community gathering place for young and old," Mansfield Mayor Betsy Paterson said in a press release.

The project was funded by a Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant. Construction is expected to be completed this fall.
