September 6, 2012 (Storrs, Conn.) – Storrs Center developer Howard Kaufman, managing member of LeylandAlliance LLC, announced today that 7-Eleven, Inc. is the latest tenant to commit to Storrs Center, a mixed-use town center that is growing quickly in the heart of this university town.
7-Eleven is the world’s largest convenience store chain and has more outlets than any other retailer or food service provider. The company adds another store to its worldwide operations every two hours. Soon, 7-Eleven will add still another store to its portfolio when its Storrs Center location opens this fall.
“The mission of 7-Eleven is to meet our store guests’ needs with fast, convenient, and friendly service and the products they want while on the go,” said 7-Eleven North Atlantic Zone Leader Dan Kaepernik. “Storrs Center is a hub of activity right in the middle of the growing Storrs community and University of Connecticut. We believe 7-Eleven will provide an important service to those who live and work here.”
At Storrs Center, 7-Eleven will occupy approximately 2,200 square feet and will offer a broad selection of fresh, high-quality products at an everyday fair price, along with speedy transactions in a clean and friendly shopping environment. The store will be open 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Essential staples, such as milk and bread, will be available along with other products to meet customer needs, such as a fresh salad for lunch, chicken wings for a tailgate party, prepaid iTunes card or a Slurpee® drink.
What started out as an ice house in Dallas, Texas, back in the 1920’s has grown and evolved into the world’s largest operator, franchisor and licensor of convenience stores. In 1927, convenience retailing began simply enough when an employee of Southland Ice Company in Dallas started selling milk, eggs, and bread from the ice dock. Soon, the convenience store was born and became known as 7-Eleven to reflect the 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. hours of operation. Now, the company operates, franchises, and licenses 7,980 stores in the U.S. and Canada. Of the approximately 6,925 stores the company operates and franchises in the United States, close to 5,100 are franchised.
Over the years, 7-Eleven has been recognized for many “industry firsts,” including being the first retailer to operate 24 hours a day, sell fresh-brewed coffee in to-go cups, and have a self-serve soda fountain. 7-Eleven has been honored by numerous companies and organizations throughout its 85 years in business. Storrs Center, a new mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented downtown center in Mansfield, Conn., features shops, restaurants, services and apartment homes that are interspersed with a town square and public areas in a new neighborhood located at the intersection of Storrs Road and the University of Connecticut.
